Q:
How expensive is a whole aquarium setup?
A:
It depends on whether you want saltwater or freshwater; reef or
fish tank and how big of a tank you want. Not to mention what
essential equipment you will need to keep organisms alive.
Q: I have saltwater fish that die for no reason, how can I keep them alive?
A: First, make sure you have the proper equipment. (IE: UV sterilizer,
chiller, protein skimmer etc.) Secondly, you must test your water constantly and
have 80% of it changed at least once a month. And also medicate when necessary.
Third, make sure you choose a proper combination of hearty fish that get along;
stress plays a big factor on the longevity of fish. Forth, fish must eat regularly,
just like us some fish need a mixed diet of vegetables and meat.
Q: If I live in the cooler northern part of the world, do I need a chiller
for my tank?
A: No you don't. As long as it stays between 74-78 degrees all year-round.
Q: If I order a fish on-line, how long do I have acclimate it for once I receive
it?
A: Every fish is different, some fish are more hearty than others; therefore,
the less hearty means more acclimation time.
Q: I have this Trigger-fish that nips at all of the new comers to the tank, how
can I get him to stop stressing them out?
A: While acclimating
the new fish, simply fill a bag or container big enough for one fish with the
water from your tank, then insert the "problem fish" into the container.
Then, when the acclimation process for the new fish is complete, insert him or
her into the tank. Finally, re-acclimate the "problem fish" and insert
when ready. This puts the "problem fish" in a seemingly new environment;
making him the newcomer.
Q: How often should I change my wet dry pads and the filter bags?
A: Typically every time you have a water change or every other time
won't hurt.
Q: How long will it take my new tank to cycle its water?
A:
Your tank will cycle faster with start-up fish (IE: Grouper or inexpensive fish)
these fish will probably die, yet it is okay. With these start up fish in place,
the tank should take roughly one and a half months. Keep in mind that the tank
will go through a mini-cycle which the water quality will drop after you put the
desired fish in the tank. Of course you must test the water prior to purchasing
fish!!
Q: If I have a tank with Sharks, can I medicate the water?
A:
It depends with what medication! (for example, Copper will kill the Sharks, yet
not the other fish) There are products on the market which are geared for a situation
like this.
